At Aura Visa & Education Consultancy, we are committed to keeping you informed about the latest developments in the global education landscape. If you’re considering higher education in the UK, there’s important news from UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service) that could make your application process smoother and more straightforward.
UCAS to Simplify Personal Statements Starting September 2025
UCAS, the organization that serves as the central link between students and UK universities, is set to introduce a new format for personal statements. This change will come into effect in September 2025 for students applying for the 2026 academic year. The aim? To make the application process more accessible, especially for international students, including those from India.
What’s Changing?
Personal statements have long been a crucial part of university applications in the UK. Traditionally, students have had to write a single, lengthy essay detailing their motivations, experiences, and qualifications. While this format has served its purpose, UCAS recognizes that it can be daunting, particularly for international applicants who may be unfamiliar with the expectations.
Starting in 2025, UCAS will replace the traditional personal statement with a series of three targeted questions:
- Why do you want to study this course or subject?
- How have your qualifications and studies prepared you for this course or subject?
- What experiences outside of education have helped prepare you for this course or subject, and why are they valuable?
Each of these questions will have a dedicated section within the personal statement, and the total length will remain at 4,000 characters, including spaces. This new structure is designed to provide clearer guidance and make it easier for applicants to highlight their strengths.
Why This Matters for Indian Students
For Indian students, this change is particularly significant. Over the years, the number of Indian applicants to UK universities has skyrocketed, growing from 4,130 in 2015 to 12,750 in 2024. However, many Indian students have faced challenges in structuring their personal statements, often due to limited access to advisors familiar with the UCAS system.
Emma Reay, Director of Student Recruitment and Admissions at Newcastle University, highlighted that the traditional personal statement format could disadvantage international applicants and students from underrepresented groups. The new question-based format aims to level the playing field by providing clearer instructions on what universities are looking for in prospective students.
Experts believe that this change will not only simplify the application process but also boost the confidence of Indian students, ensuring they can effectively showcase their capabilities and impress admissions tutors.
