Latest Changes in the Block Account Amount for Germany Effective September 2024

We have important news for international students planning to study in Germany! The German government has recently updated the block account amount requirements for student visas, effective from September 2024. This change is crucial for all prospective students to ensure they meet the financial prerequisites for their studies in Germany.

What is a Block Account?

A block account (Sperrkonto) is a special type of bank account required for international students in Germany as proof of financial resources. This account ensures that students have sufficient funds to cover their living expenses during their stay in the country.

Features of a Block Account

  • Fixed Monthly Withdrawal Limit: The account allows a fixed amount of money to be withdrawn each month to cover living expenses.
  • Proof of Financial Stability: It serves as proof to German authorities that the student can financially support themselves without relying on employment.
  • Secure and Regulated: Managed by authorized banks and financial institutions, ensuring the security of the deposited funds.

Updated Block Account Amount

As of September 2024, the required block account amount has been increased. Students must now deposit €11,904 (previously €11,208) into the block account. This amount corresponds to €992 per month for a one-year stay in Germany.

How to Open a Block Account

  1. Choose a Bank or Financial Institution:
    • Select an authorized bank or financial service provider in Germany that offers block account services. Some popular options include Deutsche Bank, Fintiba, and Expatrio.
  2. Complete the Application:
    • Fill out the online application form provided by the chosen bank or financial institution. You will need to provide personal information and details about your planned stay in Germany.
  3. Deposit the Required Amount:
    • Transfer the required block account amount (€11,904) to the account provided by the bank. This can be done via an international wire transfer.
  4. Receive Confirmation:
    • Once the funds are received, the bank will issue a confirmation letter. This letter is essential for your visa application as it proves you have the necessary financial resources.
  5. Use the Block Account in Germany:
    • Upon arrival in Germany, activate your block account by visiting a local branch of the bank or following the institution’s specific procedures. You can then start withdrawing the fixed monthly amount to cover your living expenses.
