Ensuring High Standards for International Students
Ireland is set to become one of the top destinations for international students with the introduction of the TrustEd Ireland mark in September 2024. This new quality assurance standard will be available to Irish higher education institutions and English language providers. The initiative positions Ireland among the global leaders in providing rigorous protections for international learners.
What is the TrustEd Ireland Mark?
The TrustEd Ireland mark signifies that an Irish institution has met national standards to ensure a superior experience for international students, from enrollment to the completion of their educational programs. Institutions earning this mark will need to adhere to a strict Code of Practice and provide statutory protections for students through a newly established Learner Protection Fund and scheme.
A New Milestone in Irish Education
Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation, and Science, Patrick O’Donovan, has emphasized the significance of this development. He stated, “The introduction of TrustEd Ireland is a significant milestone in our mission to position Ireland as a destination of choice for international learners, researchers, and innovators.” This quality mark will not only enhance the existing quality assurance infrastructure in Irish higher education but will also set a new standard for the English language education sector, which will be under statutory regulation for the first time.
TrustEd Ireland: What It Means for International Students
Prospective international students now have an added incentive to choose Ireland as their study destination. With the TrustEd Ireland mark, they can be assured that the institutions they choose are committed to providing a high-quality, secure, and globally recognized education experience.
The TrustEd Ireland mark will be administered by Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI), a state agency. It will be supported by two new Codes of Practice—one for higher education providers and another for English language education providers. Additionally, a rigorous due diligence evaluation will be conducted to assess the capacity and capability of private/independent education providers.
Growing Popularity of Ireland as a Study Destination
The launch of TrustEd Ireland comes at a time when Ireland is experiencing record-high foreign enrollments in both higher education and English language programs. In the 2022/23 academic year alone, 35,140 international students were enrolled, reflecting an 18% growth since 2019.
Conclusion
Ireland’s TrustEd Ireland mark is set to be one of the most robust schemes for regulating international education globally. It is the only statutory English language education inspection scheme that includes a due diligence evaluation. With this mark, international students can confidently choose Ireland, knowing that their educational experience will be of the highest quality and secure.
