Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) Updates: Major Changes to Express Entry Streams
The Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) has introduced significant changes to its Express Entry streams to better align with the federal Express Entry system. These updates are designed to streamline the immigration process for skilled workers and bolster Ontario’s ability to attract top talent.
Key Changes to the Skilled Trades and Human Capital Priorities Streams
- Reduced Work Experience Requirement: The required work experience for both the Skilled Trades and Human Capital Priorities (HCP) streams has been reduced from one year to six months. This adjustment is expected to increase opportunities for skilled workers to apply for provincial nomination.
- Focus on Specific Occupations: The Skilled Trades stream now targets specific National Occupation Classification (NOC) groups, including major groups 72, 73, 82, 83, and 93 (with certain exclusions). Additionally, candidates must have at least six months of experience in the primary NOC code they are applying under.
- Canadian Experience Class (CEC) Focus: For the HCP stream, CEC candidates must now have one year of cumulative full-time work experience in Canada within TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 occupations. Similar to the Skilled Trades stream, at least six months of this experience should be in the targeted NOC code.
What These Changes Mean for You
These updates represent a more focused approach to selecting skilled workers for immigration to Ontario. By aligning with federal standards, the OINP aims to create a more efficient and predictable immigration process. For skilled workers who meet the new eligibility criteria, these changes could provide increased opportunities to secure a provincial nomination and ultimately, permanent residency in Canada.
Given the significance of these changes, it is highly recommended to consult with an immigration professional to assess your eligibility and understand the full implications of these updates.
