We are excited to announce that the College of New Caledonia (CNC) has opened registration for the 2024 Fall intake of the StrongerBC Future Skills Grant. This grant, funded by the Government of British Columbia, offers a fantastic opportunity for students to gain essential skills and training in high-demand sectors. CNC is committed to providing comprehensive support to students through these innovative programs, ensuring they are well-prepared to enter the workforce.
About the StrongerBC Future Skills Grant
The StrongerBC Future Skills Grant is designed to help students overcome barriers and acquire the skills needed for key industries. With a funding allocation of $3.5 million, CNC is launching new programs across its six campuses. These programs are tuition-free and include all necessary training materials. Additionally, students will receive a weekly training wage and have access to work placement opportunities.
Programs Offered
- Community Ambassador in Tourism and Hospitality: This 12-week course provides students with an overview of the tourism and hospitality industry, including hotel and restaurant services, event planning, and financial management. Training includes skills for success such as communication, problem solving, and collaboration, along with certifications in occupational first aid, food safety, and more.
- Skilled Worker Access Program: This 16-week program supports trades-related work, offering skills in boom and forklift operation, building service work, and fire suppression. Students also benefit from job readiness coaching and essential skills training.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for these programs, students must face two or more of the following barriers:
- Housing instability
- Recovering from addiction
- Prior criminal justice involvement
- Mental health challenges
- Lack of recent and/or Canadian work experience
- Limited literacy or digital literacy skills
- Limited English language skills
- Being a visible minority, recent immigrant, refugee, young adult at risk, older worker, survivor of violence and/or abuse, or person with disabilities
Students must also be:
- Unemployed or precariously employed
- Legally entitled to work in Canada
- Living in British Columbia at the time of training
- Not currently enrolled in high school or post-secondary education
- Not participating in another provincially or federally funded labor market program
